The Virtual Reference Desk (VRD) is pleased to announce that three digital
reference, or "AskA," services have been recognized for excellence in
Internet-based information provision. The VRD annual Exemplary Service
Awards recognize outstanding digital reference and AskA services for their
contributions to the field of online Q&A, and for the provision of
high-quality information. The 2000 Virtual Reference Desk Exemplary
Services are:
* The Internet Public Library, sponsored by the School of Information at
the University of Michigan
* Ask a Hurricane Hunter, a service of the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance
Squadron, U.S. Air Force Reserve
* Ask Us! Online, a service of the Multnomah County Library (Oregon)
Each service will receive a VRD Exemplary Service award at the Virtual
Reference Desk's 2000 Annual Conference, "The Facets of Digital
Reference," on October 16, 2000 at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel & Towers in
Seattle, WA. In addition, a VRD Director's Award will be given to Steve
Coffman in light of his many contributions to the field of electronic
reference. Steve is Product Development Manager at Library Systems and
Services, Inc. (LSSI), and frequent author on digital reference issues.
