Hello, all!
Our college lends books to a number of groups outside our regular
institutional users (i.e., student, faculty and staff). These other users
include curators at the High Museum of Art, alumni, staff of the Woodruff
Arts Center, and community education students. With student borrowers we
have the ability to apply several different kinds of sanctions (fines,
withholding of transcripts, etc.) if they keep overdue books and/or neglect
to pay fines, but we have no policy on the non-institutional lenders other
than fines. We generally give all borrowers the option of returning the
book(s) and paying the fines or paying for the replacement costs of the
books plus fines, but often we get no response from them at all.
So my question to all of you is: what are your policies?
* Do you lend outside the basic user group? If so, what are your
regulations or fine structure/penalties and are they different from those
for regular users?
* What steps do you take to recover the books that go "AWOL"?
* Do you take (or have you threatened to take) legal action (e.g.,
small claims court)? Do you use a collection agency for the really
outrageous ones?
* Do you bargain with them? E.g., we'll waive the fines as long as
you return the book(s).
Any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated. If requested, I'll
summarize for the list.
Thanks,
Moira
