VRA Mid-Atlantic Chapter Meeting

Presentation:
   "Digital Programs on a Shoestring: An Historical Society Case" will
address how the MHS digital program has been conceived with reference to
considerably larger and well-funded projects at other institutions
around the country and implemented here with a small staff and very
basic technologies. Some themes: taking advantage of excellent
information and usable models that exist and scaling them to your
department's resources; packaging what you have for presentation on the
Web; working with volunteers and interns. On the technical side, some
discussion of our compromise between managing visual materials
collection inventories using databases (common in VR settings) vs.
text-based finding aids with Encoded Archival Description (EAD/XML)
(common in archival settings). We will have a computer projector set-up
to view the Maryland Historical Society Library's website.

At the conclusion of the meeting, people are free to view permanent
collections and exhibits at the Society until the museum closes at
4:30pm, including:
  FILMING MARYLAND (thru October 8, 2000) - Learn how the rest of the
world has come to see Maryland's history, society, and landscapes
through a century of feature films. Peruse props, costumes, scripts, and
directors' notes. Get the insider's view of Maryland's film industry.
Enjoy film clips in the gallery, and explore the locations-from downtown
Baltimore and the Naval Academy to Western Maryland-that have made the
state of Maryland a Hollywood star!

  "CELEBRATING THE BALTIMORE CITY LIFE COLLECTIONS" - Highlights include
portraiture and still-life subjects by various members of the Peale
family; photographs by famed Baltimore Sun photographer, A. Aubrey
Bodine, and images of African-American city life from photographer Paul
Henderson; images from the T. Hambleton Collection, one of the nation's
premiere collections of Baltimore history prints; and a large variety of
popular culture objects that reflect life in Baltimore City up to and
through the 20th century.

  "BALTIMORE PAINTED FURNITURE" - An in-depth look at furniture artisans
and how painted furniture was made; its stylistic characteristics and
design sources, relationships between patrons and cabinetmakers, and the
national and international market for Baltimore painted furniture.

  OTHER ATTRACTIONS and permanent collections - details available on the

Day of the Meeting:
   Come to the MHS Front Desk and state that you are attending the VRA
Meeting in The Hall. You should not have to pay admission. If you have
parked in one of the MHS parking lots, request a parking pass to place
in your car (we expect to have these available, if not, the charge for
parking in MHS lots is $2/hour, $5 maximum).

    From I-95; Exit 53 to Martin Luther King Blvd., Right on Druid Hill
Avenue (W. Centre Street). Left on Park Avenue. Turn left into bus
parking area (for bus tours) or continue to Monument Street and turn
left. Parking lots are on both sides of the street adjacent to our
entrance. Approximately 2.5 miles from I-395 exit.

    From Downtown Baltimore/Inner Harbor: Go north on Charles Street,
staying in the left lane. Turn left on Franklin Street. Turn right on
Park Avenue. Turn left on Monument Street. Parking lots are on both
sides of the street adjacent to our entrance.

    From Washington, DC, Philadelphia or BWI Airport via train: Maryland
Historical Society is 1/2 block from the Light Rail's Centre Street
stop, which connects with MARC trains to Camden Station and Penn Station
and Amtrak trains to Penn Station.

Parking:
   Parking is available. The lot is located next to our main entrance on
W. Monument Street and another is located immediately across from our
entrance. Spaces are somewhat limited, so car-pooling is encouraged. We
expect to have parking passes available at the MHS Front Desk (if not, the
charge for parking in the MHS lots is $2/hour, $5 maximum). There is
also limited street parking with a two-hour time limit (some free, some
metered).

Accessibility:
     The Museum, except for the historic Pratt House, is accessible to
persons in wheelchairs.
