This is geared towards those librarians who work at larger
college/university libraries, although not necessarily of an "art" nature.
In addition to being the Arts & Humanities Librarian, I am also the Head of
Circulation at a state university library in Florida. I have been looking
into the possibility of changing the name of my department. Currently, it
is called "Circulation/Current Periodicals & Microforms" as it includes not
only all the responsibilities of circulation but also a serials desk (where
we do basic reference; there is a separate reference dept), about 65 PCs
with Internet access, plus all the current issues of newspapers and
journals in print, plus microform collections. We also have begun to get
involved in organizing & coordinating access to electronic journals. This
department also offers reserve in both print and electronic formats, a
service I very much want to advertise more.
What are some of the "Circulation" departments named in your universities?
Do they at all reflect some of the same things I describe here?
If not, do you have any suggestions for possible names? My most popular
suggestion is to make it something like "Circulation/Periodicals/Reserves"
-- although abbreviated that makes me the Head of CPR, and this is not a
medical library or a hospital, so I'm not sure how successful that will be.
Please respond to me directly, as this is probably not of interest to
anyone on the listserv. Thanks!
