ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN/
ASSOCIATE LIBRARIAN
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has an opening for an Assistant/Associate
Librarian in the Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters.
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, policy
decisions for all aspects of The Cloisters Library, particularly on use and
access questions, collection development, acquisitions, preservation and
conservation issues, cataloging, and overseeing all budgets at The Cloisters
Library, including endowment and gift funds. The position supervises 1
full-time para-professional assistant, and represents The Cloisters Library
at Museum meetings and at regional library organizations. The Cloisters
Librarian is responsible for all day to day library work and is responsible
for administering, preserving, and maintaining the library collection.
Additional duties include responsibility for caring for non-book collection
of slides, photographs, blueprints, and archives of approximately 54
separate research collections. Acts as liaison to other departments within
the Museum, including The Thomas J. Watson Library, Finance, Accounts
Payable, Computer Systems, Purchasing, and the Museum Archives.
Qualifications: MLS Degree from an accredited library program; two to five
years experience in a museum or university library; knowledge of medieval
art and architecture highly desirable; computer proficiency required;
knowledge of two European languages desirable (German, French, Italian,
Spanish or Dutch); ability to work well with visiting scholars and
researchers, as well as staff of various departments within The Metropolitan
Museum of Art.
