by Axel Erdmann

Assembled for the first time, this fascinating study delves into all
aspects of women in the book trade during the 16th century. During a time
where the ideal characteristics of the sixteenth century woman were
"Chaste, silent, and obedient," Axel Erdmann examines these commonly-held
notions at first but then focuses on those women who broke their "silence"
by writing or by becoming involved in the book business. The first part of
this work deals with the history of books illustrated by women and women in
the book trade from Belgium, France, Germany and Italy. The second part
contains a well annotated bibliography of women writers, books with music
by women and women in the book business.
The introduction is written by Merry E. Wiesner-Hanks. She is a professor
in the Department of History at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
This is an engaging and incredibly thorough study of women and the book in
the pre-modern period. Published by Gilhofer & Ranschburg GmbH.
