POSITION TITLE:

POSITION PURPOSE:
Under administrative direction of the Director of Collections, the
Librarian is responsible for all
operations of the research library, including collection development
and maintenance,
reference, bibliographic and circulation functions, and public and
technical services. Develops
administrative policies and procedures in connection with library
functions and activities.
Develops and prepares department budgets, reports, and grant
proposals. Plans, assigns, and
directs library operations and activities of support staff.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Develops collections through regular evaluation and personal
knowledge of materials
available. Consults with curators and other staff to keep informed
of research needs and to
alert them to new materials.
* Assumes one of the leadership roles in a museum-wide effort to
provide rich, innovative,
and easy-to-use electronic materials to a wide variety of audiences
using the World Wide
Web.
* Establishes and maintains department budget, programming, and
priorities for acquisition of
library materials and operational procedures. Plans, assigns and
directs ordering, processing,
and cataloguing of library materials. Oversees library staff and
volunteers in all duties
including preparation and maintenance of various organizational
files and systems, statistical
reports, and exchange program.
* Performs reference work at an advanced level requiring extensive
searching and analysis;
performs research and directs support staff in general reference
work.
* Prepares and/or directs correspondence, records, and reports
relevant to library operations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Training: Completion of a four-year college or
university program with a
baccalaureate degree supplemented by a master's degree from a
graduate school of
librarianship and information studies accredited by the American
Library Association.
Knowledge of art history (advanced degree strongly preferred),
research methodology and a
working knowledge of one or more modern languages in addition to
English.
Work Experience: Minimum of five years of administrative experience
in an art library setting
including: staff management, financial management, collection
development, automation and
systems planning, cataloguing in MARC format using AACR2 and L.C.
classification.
Skills and Abilities: Comprehensive knowledge of library methods,
procedures, and techniques
as applied to both public and technical services; familiarity with
the literature of the field,
library automation, and the art book market. Ability to be flexible
and responsive to an
evolving work environment, work as part of a team and collaborate
with others.
ABOUT THE LIBRARY:
The Library serves Museum departments including curatorial,
education, and collections, plus
a variety of public patrons including students and faculty,
collectors and scholars. Library
holdings of 50,000 items can be found in the on-line catalog,
LibraryWorks. Collections
include over 40,000 books, artists' books and exhibition catalogs,
425 current serial titles, and
extensive artists' files. The Librarian leads a department of 2
full-time paraprofessionals and
at least 1-1 1/2 FTE part-time volunteers.
