Our library circulates books only to faculty and grad students in fine arts. So as a service to undergrads we have a student shelf where they can keep up to 10 books for up to two weeks as long as they put their name and the date on a piece of paper on top of the stack. No reference books or periodicals can be kept there. And we ask them to stack the books with the spines out so when we are looking for books it's easy to tell what titles are on the student shelves. Once a week we check the shelves and remove whatever has been there more than two weeks.
It works pretty well. Sometimes we notice there's no date so we write one in. Or we have to turn the spines so they face out. And it can be a pain to have to go to the back of the library to search for a book. But all and all it's viewed as a good service. In BI classes I always remind the students to write the call numbers of the books they leave there so if someone else uses the books and doesn't put them back, the student can easily find them again.

when users of an open stack library don't want to borrow volumes (or are not eligible to), but instead leave them on a table or in an unassigned carrel with a note asking that they not be reshelved? Do you honor the request? Indefinitely? Do you reshelve after a certain amount of time? Do you leave warning messages? If many volumes are "reserved" this way, eventually, do materials become difficult to locate? Thanks for any input you can give me.
