Join ARLIS/DC-MD-VA Chapter members for a Summer meeting and tour of
Evergreen House
Where: Evergreen House, The Johns Hopkins University; 4545 N. Charles Street
(just north of Cold Spring Lane); Baltimore, Maryland
When: Tuesday, July 18, 2000; 2:00 p.m.
The ARLIS/DC-MD-VA Chapter is invited to visit Evergreen House in north
Baltimore. Owned by Johns Hopkins University since 1952, Evergreen is an
Italianate structure situated on twenty-six wooded acres. The house, listed
on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in the 1850s. In the
1880s the house underwent renovation and new construction. One of the
highlights of Evergreen is the only extant theater designed by the famous
Russian set and costume designer, Leon Baskt. Among other features at the
house are a Rare Book Library designed by Laurence Hall Fowler, Tiffany
chandeliers, and art collections including Chinese blue-and-white porcelain,
lacquer boxes, Japanese netsuke, and twentieth-century paintings. There are
also formal gardens and an 1870s carriage house on the grounds at Evergreen.
The meeting is being generously sponsored by the Milton S. Eisenhower
Library of the Johns Hopkins University, and hosted by Don Juedes, Librarian
for Art, History, Classics and Philosophy at MSEL.
Our tour of Evergreen House will begin promptly at 2 pm, followed by a
Chapter business meeting in the Far East Room and light refreshments. Among
important issues to be addressed at the meeting are Chapter officer
nominations for 2001 and the formation of a committee to oversee awarding
the first annual Caroline Backlund Travel Award.
