I've read the LC proposal, the CAC's, Mark Bresnan's, and Jay Smith's
responses, and talked a bit with my colleagues in the local ARLIS chapter
and my cataloging co-workers (none of whom are art specialists). Here are
my feelings:
* Change in assignment
I like dropping the requirement to assign a redundant heading. I will
probably continue adding chronological headings; otherwise, patrons who use
century numbers in keyword searches would miss some records.
* Changes in formulation
Adding chronological subdivisions to qualified headings follows the
'topic-place-chron.-form' pattern. Looks good.
Omitting geographic subdivisions from 'Art, Ancient', etc. I'm not so sure
about. If adding the subdiv. makes sense according to H830, it will hard
for generalist catalogers to refrain, and as Mark points out, the geographic
name provides keyword access.
A free-floaters list will be helpful for subject specialists like me, but
again, will it help generalists? Here they can just pass the book to me,
but the concept of origin vs. location (which hasn't come up in the revision
discussion) is a nicety not widely grasped. I enhance a lot of OCLC records
with headings that are correct in structure but non-H1250-compliant. In
addition to workshops, any changes should be well-publicized -- how about
colored replacement pages to the affected parts of SCM?
I *do* like the proposed expansion of individual century subdivs. from the
10th onward, and it also makes sense that architecture and art headings be
treated similarly. As Jay says, any changes will coexist with obsolete
headings.
Our public services staff will have to help patrons cope. I'm eager to hear
their reactions!
